MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team is headed to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) championship. The Eagles entered the tournament as the regular season runner-up to the Saints of the College of St. Scholastica. UNW swept Martin Luther College (9-0) Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center to advance to the second day of the tournament.

The Purple and Gold immediately got things rolling and never looked back.
Karen Moe (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South ) claimed the victory (6-1, 6-2) in No. 1 singles to further add to her impressive season. In No. 2 singles,
Jessica Henke (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) got a close win (6-2, 7-5), while
Tina Matetich (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) grabbed the No. 3 singles honor (6-4, 6-0). The Eagles got continued dominance in singles play, with
Brooke Lapinski (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen) winning in the No. 4 spot (6-1, 6-1).
Emily Knight (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) took care of No. 5 singles (6-1, 6-0) to keep perfection alive. In No. 6 singles,
Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) recorded the only perfect match of the afternoon (6-0, 6-0) to round out the Eagles' play.
UNW cruised in doubles play, starting with Moe and Henke sweeping (8-0) No. 1 doubles. The pairing of Matetich and Knight proved successful in No. 2 doubles (8-1) for another Northwestern victory. In the last matchup of the day, teammates Bostrom and
Nikki Edin (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley) punched out another win (8-3) to finish the day for the Eagles.
The UMAC tournament will continue tomorrow, Saturday, May 7, at 1:30 p.m. UNW will face the top-seeded Saints for the title. St. Scholastica is the only UMAC opponent to defeat Northwestern this season, with the most recent match coming just last week (6-3). Both the Eagles and Saints are rolling into the final on perfect sweeps, as St. Scholastica defeated Bethany Lutheran College 9-0. The conference tournament will come to a thrilling conclusion at the Baseline Tennis Center.
