Baseball Makes It 12 In A Row; Remains Unbeaten in UMAC

ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern baseball team chalked up its 11th and 12th straight wins Tuesday, as the Eagles swept the University of Wisconsin-Superior in a critical Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) doubleheader at Reynolds Field. UNW held on, 11-9, in the opener before securing a 6-3 victory in game two. Northwestern's 12-game winning streak is the third-longest in program history.

UNW betters its season record to 18-14 overall and a perfect 10-0 in conference play, while UWS falls to 12-12 overall and 8-4 in UMAC action.

Game One
Northwestern didn't waste any time getting on the board, as Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) homered in the first to give starting pitcher Troy Nelson (Buena Park, Calif. /Buena Park) an early lead to work with.

The Eagles cushioned the gap with a combined 10 runs in the third through fifth innings – extending their lead to 11-2. Osborn blasted his his team-leading fifth home run of the year in the fourth and Brett Reinhart (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) followed suit with a solo shot of his own to highlight the scoring for UNW.

The Yellowjackets would make things interesting, scoring six runs in the top of the seventh and adding another in the eighth to cut the deficit to 11-9, but Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) pitched a scoreless 1.2 innings to close the door and give the Eagles the win. Sutterer picked up his fifth save in his seventh appearance of the season.

Sutterer, the reigning UMAC Player of the Week, added four more hits to his season resume, as he finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored, while Brett Reinhart (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) and John Hietpas (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) posted three-hit performances at the dish.

Troy Nelson (Buena Park, Calif. /Buena Park) (4-4) allowed just two earned runs in six innings of work to get the win. The senior right-hander fanned four, while issuing just one walk.

Game Two
The Eagles scored twice in the first and then added a run in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings to account for their six runs.

John Hietpas (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge), who finished 2-for-2, laced a two-run single in the bottom of the first to generate the first runs of the game. Bradley Spencer (Papillion, NE/Papillion South) launched his second home run of the season in the second and added an RBI single in the third en route to finishing 3-for-4 at the plate.

Benjamin Jenney (Albertville, Minn./Maranatha Christian) was just an out away from going the distance, as the senior tossed 8.2 innings, giving up just three runs on eight hits. He struck out a pair and remains perfect on the bump (5-0). Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) secured the save, as he recorded the final out with the Yellowjackets threatening with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth.

The Eagles will welcome Macalester College for a non-conference contest Thursday. First pitch from Reynolds Field is set for 6 p.m. Fans can find more information at www.unweagles.com.
