DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Northwestern baseball team finally got over the hump Saturday, as the Eagles defeated the College of St. Scholastica for the first time since April 21, 1998, at Wade Stadium. After dropping the opener 9-1, UNW bounced back with a thrilling 5-4 victory to earn the split. UNW and CSS remain tied for first in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) standings after Saturday's twin bill, boasting 11-1 records.
UNW now sits at 19-15 overall, while the Saints' overall record moves to 21-9. The loss in Saturday's first game ended Northwestern's 12-game winning streak.
Game One
Northwestern struck first, plating a run in the top of the second, but couldn't muster any more offense at the dish, dropping the contest 9-1.
The Eagles' lone run came on an
Aaron Rau (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) sacrifice fly that scored
John Hietpas (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge). Hietpas reached earlier in the frame after being hit by a pitch.
Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) was a bright spot for UNW, finishing the contest 3-for-4 at the dish, while
Tucker Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) drew two walks.
Erik Nyquist (Elk River, Minn./Pine Island) was tagged with the loss, as the sophomore surrendered eight runs on 10 hits.
Game Two
Trailing 2-1 heading into the top of the sixth, UNW put together a four-run sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead and never looked back, securing a 5-4 win.
Just as they did in the first game, the Eagles got on the board first, as
John Hietpas (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) recorded a sacrifice fly to score
Braxton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) in the top of the first.
CSS evened things up in the bottom of the second and then took a 2-1 lead an inning later.
Facing a one-run deficit, Northwestern got the spark it needed in the sixth, as
Erik Nyquist (Elk River, Minn./Pine Island) and
Braxton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) delivered back-to-back two-run knocks to give the Eagles a 5-2 advantage.
CSS would push a run across in the bottom of the sixth and again in the eighth, but
Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) came in to pitch a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the win. Two of Sutterer's three outs came via strikeouts. It marks his fifth save of the season.
Tucker Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) picked up the win on the bump, allowing just two earned runs in six innings of work. Morrell gave way to
Benjamin Jenney (Albertville, Minn./Maranatha Christian), who didn't give up an earned run, while striking out three.
Leadoff hitter
Braxton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) led the charge at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while Sutterer and
Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) posted two hits apiece.
The Eagles will return to Reynolds Field for a mid-week conference doubleheader with Minnesota Morris on Wednesday. Fans can find more information on UNW baseball at
