ST. PAUL –
Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) went an eye-popping 8-for-10 and
Erik Nyquist (Elk River, Minn./Pine Island) and
Tucker Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) turned in great outings on the hill, as the University of Northwestern baseball team pushed its win streak to 10 with a sweep of Northland College Saturday in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action at Reynolds Field. The Eagles took game one, 8-2, before grabbing an 11-8 victory in game two.
The Eagles improve to 16-14 overall and remain a perfect 8-0 in league play, while the Lumberjacks fall to 12-17 overall and 4-4 in the league.
Game One
Northwestern didn't waste any time getting on the board, as
Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) posted his first of eight hits on the day, doubling down the right field line to score
Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian).
The Eagles added a pair of runs in the second and third innings to take a commanding 5-1 run.
After tacking on another run in the fourth, UNW distanced itself even more in the sixth when
Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) belted a solo homer. Osborn finished 2-for-3 in game one, with a pair of RBI and runs scored.
UNW scored again in the eighth and
Erik Nyquist (Elk River, Minn./Pine Island) continued his dominance on the bump, as the Eagles secured an 8-2 win. Nyquist was lights out, allowing just two runs on eight hits, while fanning seven.
Sutterer ended the opener 4-for-5 to lead the offensive attack.
Game Two
Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) continued his terror at the plate, as he accounted for UNW's first three runs, lacing a run-scoring double in the first and then smashing a two-run bomb in the third to put the Eagles on top 3-0.
Northland would answer back with two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead.
UNW responded with a five-run seventh inning and never looked back, taking the contest, 11-8.
Bradley Spencer (Papillion, NE/Papillion South) highlighted the big seventh for UNW, as the freshman blasted his first career home run – a three-run shot over the left field fence – to extend the Eagles' lead.
Tucker Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) worked 8.2 innings on the hill, surrendering five earned runs, while striking out three en route to picking up the win.
Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) came in to get the final out to notch his fourth save of the season.
Sutterer finished 4-for-5 in game two, while driving in four and scoring three runs. He finished the weekend with 13 hits and 11 RBI.
Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) and
John Hietpas (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) also had big days at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 at the dish.
