MANKATO, Minn. – The University of Northwestern baseball continued its winning ways, as the Eagles swept Bethany Lutheran College in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action Friday at the BLC Baseball Field. UNW took game one 14-6 before holding on for a 5-4 game two victory.
With the win, the Eagles even their season record at 14-14 and improve to a perfect 6-0 in loop play, while the Vikings drop to 4-16 overall and 2-6 in conference contests.
Game One
The Eagles trailed 4-2 heading into the sixth inning, but a six-run fourth put UNW on top 8-4. Northwestern added three runs in the fifth and three more in the ninth to secure the win.
Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) continued to stay hot at the plate, as he finished 3-for-5 with six RBI. His three-run blast highlighted UNW's six-run fourth. The round-tripper was his third of the year.
Braxton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) and
Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) also turned in stellar performances, as Lindow finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in, while Osborn knocked in five runs.
Troy Nelson (Buena Park, Calif. /Buena Park) got the nod on the hill, tossing the first five innings to pick up the win. He struck out six while allowing five earned runs. Jake Franzen was sharp out of the pen, throwing four innings of shutout ball to close the door on the Vikings.
Game Two
UNW rallied with a pair of runs in the eighth to complete the sweep.
Northwestern scored a run in the third and fourth innings on RBI groundouts from
Braxton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) and
Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin), respectively. Lindow then smashed a run-scoring double in the seventh to even the score at three.
With the game tied at 3-3, freshman
Bradley Spencer (Papillion, NE/Papillion South) knocked in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly, scoring
Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ).
Tucker Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) followed that up with a RBI single to score
John Hietpas (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and give UNW a 5-3 lead.
Benjamin Jenney (Albertville, Minn./Maranatha Christian) moved to 4-0 on the year on the mound, working the first eight innings. The senior right-hander surrendered four runs on 10 hits.
Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) claimed his third save of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth.
Sutterer and Morrell both posted multi-hit performances at the dish (2-for-3).
The Eagles will get a brief rest before hosting Northland College in a critical conference doubleheader Saturday at Reynolds Field. First pitch in game one is slated for 1:30 p.m. Fans can find more information at
