UNW Drops Contest at Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS – The University of Northwestern (0-2) women's lacrosse team fell to Colorado College (1-0), 23-1, at Stewart Field on Friday afternoon. The Eagles presented a determined effort to secure their program's first victory, but a strong offensive set landed the Tigers their first triumph of the season.

The first half of the contest closed with Tigers having an 18-0 upperhand. Despite the score, the Eagles did not give up the fight. Northwestern's goalie, Sydney Werlein (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North), had six impressive saves to conclude both halves.

Weaving her way through Colorado College's defenders, midfielder Jordyn Broberg (Mahtomedi, Minn./Montomedi) found the back of the net in the second half to mark Northwestern's single goal of the game. Broberg also had three shots on goal to close the match.

CC attacker, Annie DeFrino, was the individual game leader with five out of six goals made against the Eagles. Following DeFrino was Steph Kelly on the leaderboard with four goals to add to the Tigers victory.

The Eagles defense was an encouraging team effort from beginning to end. Head Coach Taylor Deetjen affirmed, "As a team they gave a outstanding effort. Colorado College is a great team with a history of talented, experienced players and we knew that going into today's game. I was proud of them for holding their heads high, showing good sportsmanship, and for maintaining a positive attitude the entire time they were on the field. Our team fought hard in the midst of adversity and gave a 100% effort."

The Eagles will look to score a win on March 5th as they take on the Southwestern University Pirates on Stewart Field at Colorado College. Visit unweagles.com for more information.
