ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern baseball team bounced back from a 3-0 loss in game one Tuesday with a thrilling 4-3 victory in the nightcap to earn a split with visiting Gustavus Adolphus College at Reynolds Field.
UNW moves to 5-10 on the year, while Gustavus now sits at an even 2-2.
Game One
Gustavus did all of its damage in the fifth inning, as the Gusties scored three runs off UNW starter
Erik Nyquist (Elk River, Minn./Pine Island) to provide the only offense in the contest. Nyquist gave up six hits and three earned runs, while striking out a pair.
Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) led the Eagles at the plate, as he finished 2-for-2 at the dish, while also drawing a walk.
Benjamin Jenney (Albertville, Minn./Maranatha Christian) threw two innings of shutout ball in relief of Nyquist, fanning three GAC batters.
Game Two
The Eagles bounced back with an exciting victory in the second game of the day, as UNW pushed runs across in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings to earn its fifth win of the season.
After Gustavus tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth, Northwestern scored what would be the game-winning run when pinch runner
David Beer (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) scored on a wild pitch. Beer entered the game to run for
John Hietpas (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge), who led off the frame with a double to right field.
Jenney picked up the win out of the pen, throwing 1.1 innings of shutout ball.
Troy Nelson (Buena Park, Calif. /Buena Park) had another solid outing on the bump, as the senior tossed 5.2 innings, surrendering just one earned run, while striking out three.
Braxton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) and
Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) each supplied a RBI at the plate to pace the UNW offense.
The Eagles will travel down Snelling Avenue to meet non-conference foe Bethel University next Tuesday. First pitch at Hargis Park is slated for 3:30 p.m. Fans can find more information on the baseball season at
