ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team picked up its 20th win of the season Saturday, as the Eagles topped Bethany Lutheran College on Senior Day inside the Ericksen Center. The Eagles, who reached the 20-win plateau for the second consecutive season, run their overall record to 20-3 and improve to 13-2 in league play.
UNW honored its two seniors –
Michael Carney (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) and
Kyle Ooms (Hollandale, MN/Albert Lea High School) – prior to tip.
It is the eighth time Northwestern has won 20 games in a season under the direction of head coach
Tim Grosz.
The Eagles used an explosive second half to earn the hard-fought victory, as UNW scorched the nets for 49 points in the final 20 minutes of play after trailing 28-25 at the break. The hot-shooting Eagles posted a blistering 69.57 shooting percentage in the final frame en route to outscoring the Vikings 49-35.
Porter Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) scored 19 of his game-high 28 points in the second half. Morrell also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and dished out six assists to lead all players. Carney made the most of his final regular season home game, as the senior drilled six triples on his way to scoring 19 points.
Aaron Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area) was the third player to reach double figures, as he added 12.
The Eagles will hit the road next weekend for their final regular season games of the season, playing at the University of Wisconsin-Superior (Friday) and the College of St. Scholastica (Saturday). Fans can find more information at
