SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team suffered a 94-86 setback against the University of Wisconsin-Superior (12-12, 7-7) inside Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium Friday evening. The Eagles drop to 20-4 overall and 12-3 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play.
Senior
Michael Carney (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) drained six 3-pointers en route to scoring a season-high 28 points, but a potent UWS offense prevailed in a shootout. With his six triples, Carney now moves into third place for career three-pointers made at Northwestern (260).
A red-hot Yellowjackets squad shot 54.8 percent from the field in the first half to take a 44-38 lead into the locker room. In a high-scoring second half,
Anderson Bazile Jr. (Houston, Tex./San Antonio Reagan) drilled back-to-back threes on consecutive possessions to give the Eagles a 63-62 lead midway through the second half. The two teams then traded buckets before UWS went up 68-65 on a Brian Lindblom three and never looked back, taking the contest, 94-86.
Kyle Ooms (Hollandale, MN/Albert Lea High School) netted 16 points, while
Cody Sprenger (Grey Eagle, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) was one rebound short of a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine boards.
The Eagles had a strong night shooting the ball, finishing the contest shooting 47.8 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from long range. The Yellowjackets finished the evening 54.2 percent from the field and 50 percent from long range.
