ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team (1-3, 1-1 UMAC) competed against the College of St. Scholastica (1-6, 1-1 UMAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the Erickson Center in another Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) contest. The battle was won by the Eagles – who secured a 63-53 victory.
Setting the tone of the game, UNW took the floor ready for action as they posted a 12-5 lead in the opening 5:00. The momentum proceeded for UNW, as they were able to finish off the first quarter with a 17-11 lead over the visiting team.
UNW offense continued in their strong efforts as
Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) led the Eagles with 15 points to close the half. Teammates
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and
Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) also had a strong showing as they added 13 points and five points to the scoreboard to help boost a 37-22 lead at the close of the 20:00 split.
Taking on the third quarter, Northwestern kept up its powerful attack. St. Scholastica became frazzled early on, and UNW was able to take advantage of more shooting opportunities to extend their lead 43-28 with 4:30 left to play in the period.
Though the Eagles held onto a lead the entire game, the Saints trailed UNW by only four points with 6:00 remaining in regulation. As time dwindled down on the ticker, it was the home team that cruised to a 63-53 victory over the Saints – securing their first win on the 2016-17 season.
Northwestern shot 42.4% from the field, while St. Scholastica finished the mid-day match by shooting 30.4% from the floor.
The game leaders on the match were Berglund (20pts, 3 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks, 2 rebounds), Stubbs (15pts, 5 rebounds), Tumbleson (9pts, 8 rebounds, 4 steals), and Emily Van Lith (7 pts, 7 rebonds, 1 assist, 1 block).
