Women’s Hoops Tabs 73-50 Win Over Finlandia

HANCOCK, MICH. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team competed against Finlandia University (3-6) at the Paavo Nurmi Center Friday afternoon. The Eagles notched a 73-50 win over the Lions, and now improve to 4-4 on the season.

Northwestern used a strong offensive effort in the first quarter, holding the home team to just seven points in the opening 10:00 minutes to take an early 19-7 lead.

Throughout the second, UNW outscored Finlandia 19-13 to boost a 38-20 lead heading into halftime.

Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) paced the squad in the first 20:00 minutes of play, recording 10 points, three rebounds, and one assist – going 4-6 from the floor and 2-4 from behind the arch. Teammate Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) also had a strong showing on the half, as she was able to note nine points, two rebounds, and one assist for the Eagles.  

Over the course of the third quarter, Northwestern once again overtook the Lions 22-8 – posting a 60-28. Though Finlandia outscored the Eagles 13-22 in the final 10:00 stretch, it was UNW who tabbed the 73-50 victory.

Northwestern shot 50.9% from the field, while Finlandia finished the match by shooting 27.4% from the floor. The squad also concluded with 48 rebounds (11 OFF & 37 DEF), 13 assists, 5 steals, and two blocks. 

The game leaders on the match were Stubbs (13pts, 4 rebounds, 2 assists), Logan Retzlaff (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) (12pts, 6 rebounds), Berglund (11pts, 2 rebounds, 1 assist), and Jazinae Patterson (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) (9pts, 9 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 assist).
