ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team knocked off Carleton College (1-7), 51-32, Wednesday night in a non-conference contest inside the Ericksen Center. With the win, the Eagles improve to 3-4 on the year.
Wednesday marked a stretch in which UNW will play five games in four different states over the course of seven days.
Northwestern used a strong defensive effort in the first quarter, holding the visitors to just seven points in the opening frame to take an early 12-7 lead. After an evenly played second quarter, the Eagles took a 21-17 advantage into the locker room.
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) paced the way in the first 20 minutes of play, scoring six points and grabbing six boards.
The Eagles came out of the break on a mission, outscoring the Knights 30-15 in the second half to run away with the victory, 51-32.
Berglund led the Eagles with 10 points on 5-of-11 shooting, while
Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian),
Emily VanLith (Minot, N.D./Our Redeemers) and
Logan Retzlaff (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) all added seven apiece. Berglund also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and
Rachel Hart (Elgin, Minn./Home School) and
Jessica Brown (Watford City, N.D./Watford City) racked up seven each. All seven of Brown's boards were on the offensive end.
Northwestern shot 35.6 percent (21-of-59) from the floor, while Carleton ended the night hitting 27.9 percent (12-of-43) from the field.
The Eagles will kick off a six-game road trip Friday when they travel to Hancock, Mich., to take on Finlandia. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. (CST). More information on the women's basketball program can be found at
