UNW Holds Off North Central In 65-56 Win Saturday

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team (2-4, 2-1 UMAC) took on North Central University (1-7, 0-3 UMAC) in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) road contest at the CLC Gymnasium in Minneapolis on Saturday afternoon. The mid-day competition was won by the Eagles – who notched a 65-56 win over the Rams.

Taking the floor ready for action, both teams battled in a hard-fought match during the opening 10:00 of play. Putting forth solid efforts, the first quarter ended with a 15-15 tie score.

Throughout the second quarter action, UNW was able to outshoot the home team 21-11. The team's strong offensive push helped the Eagles boost a 36-26 lead heading into intermission. Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) led the Eagles as she closed with six points, two assists, one steal, and one rebound on the half.

As the next period took off, North Central came out with guns blazing as they inched their way back into the game to lead by one (47-46) at the close of the third.

With some much needed energy, the Eagles took on the final minutes with all they had. As the game came down to the wire, UNW was able to pull ahead and snatch a 65-56 victory over the home team.  

As a collective group, Northwestern finished the mid-day competition with a 44.8 shooting percentage from the field – which outshined North Central's 40.7% from the floor. The team also finished with a grand total of 25 rebounds, 16 assists, 14 steals, and one block. 

The game leaders on the day's match were Berglund (14pts, six rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists), Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) (13pts, 4 steals, 2 assists, 1 rebound), Jazinae Patterson (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) (8pts, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal)  and Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) (8pts, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 rebound).
