MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball (0-2 overall) competed in a non-conference contest against Augsburg College at the Si Melby Hall on Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis. In what was a hard-fought match, the Eagles came up short to the Auggies 89-65.
Having an outstanding performance throughout the first half for UNW was Senior guard
Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian), who went 6-10 on field goal attempts – making 4-7 three pointers – to total 16 points to lead the team. Teammate
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) also had a strong showing on the half, as the Junior guard was able to record nine points and one assist.
Trailing Augsburg 48-40 at the close of the first 20:00 battle, UNW managed to go 13-26 (50%) from the paint and 5-11 (45.5%) from the three-point range to outshine AC's 17-36 (47.2%) field goal attempts and 10-19 (56.2%) three-point range shots.
As the Eagles took on the second half, the ladies put forth their best efforts to catch the Auggies.
Logan Retzlaff (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter), a sophomore guard, made her mark on the game as she noted seven points on the half as teammate Emily Van Lith posted six.
Though the Eagles were outscored in the third and final period of the competition – 21-14 (3Q) and 20-11 (4Q) – UNW was able to add 25 more points to the scoreboard. By the final buzzer, the Auggies strong offensive force became too much to break, as the home team ran away with an 89-65 victory on the mid-day contest.
UNW shot 43.8% from the field, while AC finished the day by shooting 46.6% from the floor.
The game leaders on the day were Stubbs (16pts, 1 assist), Berglund (13pts, 3 steals, 1 assist),
Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) (11pts, 4 assists, 3 blocks, 1 steal), and Van Lith (8pts, 4 assists, 2 blocks, 1 steal).
The purple and gold will be back in action on Friday, December 2
