ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team dropped its season opener to visiting Hamline University (2-0) 66-56 Saturday afternoon inside the Ericksen Center.
UNW jumped out to an early 19-15 lead after the first quarter, but couldn't hang on. Hamline outscored the Eagles 23-7 in the second quarter to take a 12-point lead into the locker room and never looked back, taking the non-conference contest.
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) picked up right where she left off a season ago, as the junior poured in 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting. She also was a perfect 6-for-6 at the charity stripe, while also grabbing eight boards. Senior
Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) cashed in a trio of 3-pointers en route to finishing with 13 points.
Rachel Hart (Elgin, Minn./Home School) chipped in six points after finishing 2-of-2 from the floor and 2-for-2 at the line.
Northwestern shot 33.3 percent (20-for-60) from the floor in the game, while Hamline checked in at 38.1 percent from the field. A cold shooting afternoon from downtown also hindered the Eagles, as they finished 4-of-27 from long range.
The Eagles will be off until they travel to Augsburg College next Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest in Minneapolis. Fans can find more information at
