ASHLAND, WIS. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team (5-6-1) kicked off another Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) battle on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles were able to seal a 4-0 victory on the mid-day match to boost a 4-2 record in UMAC play.
Kicking off the contest, UNW's
Chris Cleope (Waterloo, Iowa./Waterloo West) wasted no time as he tapped in the first and only goal on the half 2:00 into play. Throughout the rest of the 43:00 period, UNW and NC battled back in forth in their attempts to post more goals, but none managed to fall in either teams favor. Cleope's solo goal gave Northwestern a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Closing the first, Northwestern fired off 13 shots to outshine Northland's three.
Ten minutes into the second half,
Derrick Aminga (Andover, Minn./Andover) netted the teams second on the afternoon. Shortly after, Cleope found the back of the net for another to stretch a 3-0 lead.
Aiding in the action was
Joshua Robertson (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian), who earned the assist on Cleope's goal.
At the 63', Robertson then posted UNW's fourth and final goal of the game, and a first on the season, to help secure a 4-0 win on the days' competition.
Closing the contest, the men recorded 26S and 17SOG. The game leaders on the match were Cleope (6S / 4SOG / 2G), Aminga (5S / 2SOG, 1G), Robertson (2S / 2SOG / 1G / 1A),
Eric Fast (Eagan, Minn./Homeschool) (2S / 1A),
Taylor Modaff (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (2S / 2SOG), and
Matthew McCann (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) (2S / 2SOG).
The team will play next against Macalaster on Monday, October 10
