ST. PAUL, MINN – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team (5-7-1) faced Macalester College in a non-conference contest on Monday evening. The hard-fought 90:00 battle was won by the Scots, who captured the 2-1 victory to conclude the competition.
Opening up the match, MC took an early 1-0 lead as they netted their first goal at the 12:00 mark. Though Macalester posted another with 4:00 remaining in the first, UNW fought as hard as possible to hold off the home team.
As the first period came to a close, the Scots held onto a 2-0 lead.
Taking the field for the second half, Northwestern came out with a stronger attack.
Matthew McCann (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) found the back of the net at the 69:00 mark to put the Eagles on the scoreboard, as teammate
Mark Cleope (Waterloo, Iowa./Waterloo West) tallied the assist. Still trailing Macalester 2-1, UNW kept up the fight.
As the clock wound down, the Eagles continued to pressure the Scots, but were unable to boost the score. The game resulted in MC's favor, as they managed to seal a 2-1 victory on the night.
Closing the evening action, UNW recorded six shots and three shots on goal. The stat leaders on the game were
