FULTON, Mo. – The University of Northwestern football team (7-1, 6-1) scored 14 points in the first and third quarters to pick up a key 28-6 road win at Westminster College (4-4, 4-3) Saturday afternoon. With the win, UNW continues to sit atop the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) standings and controls its own destiny heading into the final two games of the season.
BJ Foster (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) scored a pair of first quarter touchdowns on runs that covered 14 and four yards to put the Eagles up 14-6 after the opening frame. Sandwiched between Foster's scores was a Latif Adams 2-yard touchdown plunge that gave the Blue Jays their lone score of the afternoon.
The second half saw
Corban Halbur (Richfield, Minn./Richfield) connect on a pair of passing touchdowns, as the senior signal caller first found freshman
Gavin Welch (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) on a 9-yard strike early in the third quarter before Halbur hooked up with fellow senior
Cody Carlson (Dallas Center, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) on a 25-yard connection with 7:36 remaining in the third.
Daniel Stratton (Lucerne Valley, Calif./Lucerne Valley) led the defense, tallying eight tackles, including half of a sack and one tackle for loss.
Ben Greener (Foley, Minn./Home School) was in on six stops, while
Gideon Burnham (Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson) posted a tackle for loss and half of a sack.
Nick Swore (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) picked off Trent White and the UNW defense held a very talented Latif Adams to 82 yards rushing.
Halbur finished the day 17-of-31 for 194 yards and a pair of scores and most importantly didn't turn the ball over.
BJ Foster (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) racked up 122 yards on 19 carries, giving him an impressive 6.4 average per carry.
Gavin Welch (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) led all receivers with four catches for 57 yards, while
Cody Carlson (Dallas Center, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) and
Payton Bowdry (Minneapolis, Minn./South) also hauled in four receptions on the afternoon.
The Eagles ground game churned up 168 yards, while UNW covered 194 yards through the air for a total of 362 on the afternoon. Westminster finished the matinee with 312 totals yards.
