ST. PAUL – Coming off its biggest win of the season, the University of Northwestern football team (6-1, 5-1) will pack up to head south to Fulton, Mo., Saturday, as the Eagles have a date with Westminster College Blue Jays (4-3, 4-2) at 12 noon. Forecasts are calling for 70 degrees and sunny skies Saturday at Priest Field.
THE NORTHWESTERN FILE
The Eagles snapped the College of St. Scholastica's 35-game Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) winning streak last Saturday in Duluth, as the Eagles prevailed 14-7. The UNW defense once again stepped up, as the Saints – who were averaging better than 41 points per game – were held to just a third quarter touchdown. The Eagles picked off CSS's Kyle Stepka four times and kept the CSS offense under 300 yards of total offense.
Corban Halbur (Richfield, Minn./Richfield) was impressive as well, as the senior signal caller finished 19-of-33 for 262 yards and a score through the air.
A LOOK AT THE OPPONENT
A very dangerous Westminster team is averaging nearly 380 yards of total offense and over 25 points per game. The Blue Jay's have won three of their last four contests, most recently picking up a decisive 48-0 win over Martin Luther College last week in New Ulm. WC's two conference losses were only by a combined 16 points.
TALLEY LEADS TEAM USA
UNW Head Coach
Kirk Talley was given the honor of leading the Team USA Football team at the World University Championships this past May and June in Monterrey, Mexico. The team played against Japan, China, Guatemala and Mexico in the round-robin style championship format.
IN THE POLLS
After finishing runner-up in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) a season ago, UNW was tabbed to finish second in the league in last week's UMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. St. Scholastica was selected as the preseason favorite after putting together a perfect conference slate last fall.
GOOD WORK, GREENER
UNW senior linebacker
Ben Greener (Foley, Minn./Home School) was nominated for the 2016 America Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team. The Eagles' leading tackler in 2015 was one of 165 college football players nominated for the prestigious award that recognizes those committed to service and enriching the lives of others
