DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Northwestern football team (6-1, 5-1 UMAC) competed against Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) rival St. Scholastica (5-2, 5-1) Saturday evening. The UMAC Game of the Week was won by the Eagles with a 14-7 defeat over the host Saints. The win snapped CSS's 35-game conference winning streak and 18-game home winning streak.
Throughout the opening frame, neither team was able to generate any points on offense, as the Eagles saw their scoring opportunity come to a halt when CSS blocked
Ben Lyons (North Olmstead, Ohio/Ohio Distance & Electronic Learning Academy)' field goal attempt.
Heading into the second quarter, the showdown remained scoreless. Controlling the tempo for UNW was senior signal caller
Corban Halbur (Richfield, Minn./Richfield), who completed three passes, which led to another scoring opportunity for the Eagles.
BJ Foster (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) capped the 11-play, 68-yard drive with a 4-yard rushing touchdown. Lyons added the PAT to give UNW a 7-0 advantage.
On Northwestern's next possesion, Halbur completed a 31-yard pass to
Gavin Welch (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) to set the Eagles up with a 1st & Goal at the CSS 10-yard line.. Shortly following, Halbur completed a 13-yard touchdown strike to
Cody Carlson (Dallas Center, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) to put the Eagles up two scores.
Owning a 14-0 lead at the break, a stingy UNW defense held the Saints - who are averaging over 41 points per game - scoreless again in the third.
By the time the fourth quarter came around, St. Scholastica was able to storm its way into the end zone. With 14:53 to play, CSS cut UNW's lead to 14-7 with a 13-yard touchdown pass.
The Saints had their final chance to even the score with under a minute to play, but
Ryan Van Maanen (Oshkosh, Wis./Valley Christian) intercepted a Kyle Stepka pass to secure the 14-7 win for the Eagles.
Northwestern's stout defense picked off Stepka four times on the night, with
Nick Swore (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian),
Daniel Stratton (Lucerne Valley, Calif./Lucerne Valley) and
Gideon Burnham (Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson) grabbing the other three interceptions for the Eagles.
Beau Walter (Conway, Ark./Conway) and
Ben Greener (Foley, Minn./Home School) racked up nine tackles each, while
Andrew Smith (Henning, Minn./Henning) recorded 2.5 tackles for loss.
Halbur finished 19-of-33 for 262 yards and a score through the air, while
Cody Carlson (Dallas Center, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) hauled in seven of those completions for 122 yards.
BJ Foster (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) churned his way for a game-high 52 yards on the ground. The Eagles outgained the Saints 351-283 on the night,
