ST. PAUL – The 24th-ranked University of Northwestern volleyball team rolled to a 3-1 win over No. 22 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Tuesday night inside the Ericksen Center. The Eagles won by set scores of 25-22, 25-15, 23-25, 25-16 on their way to improving to 21-3 on the season.
After a very competitive back-and-forth first set, the Eagles cruised to a 25-15 win in set two. UWEC found its stride in the third set to force a fourth. The Eagles didn't go down easily though, nearly rallying from a 24-20 deficit to earn the sweep. Northwestern then bounced back and took a commanding lead in set four and never relinquished that advantage to take the Top 25 showdown.
Lindsey Peterson (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) was electric again Tuesday, notching a double-double with 25 kills and 24 digs – both match highs.
Shanay Gonder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) continues to cause havoc for opponents in the middle, as the senior racked up seven blocks, while
Toria Gillson (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Christian) and Peterson contributed five each.
Jackie Doering (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) added 18 digs and
Freya Hanson (Otsego, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) provided eight kills and 11 digs to aid the winning effort.
It was the Eagles owning the net, posting 13 blocks to the Blugolds' four. UNW also recorded four service aces, while UWEC only had one ace on the night.
The Eagles will travel to the UW-Eau Claire tournament this weekend for three matches. UNW will open play with a big 7 p.m. match with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Friday. Fans can find more information at
