Grosz Picks Up Win No. 300 in UNW’s 87-78 Victory Over UW-Superior

ST. PAUL – Already the winningest head coach in program history, University of Northwestern head men's basketball coach Tim Grosz reached another milestone Saturday, as the 47-year-old tallied win No. 300 (At Northwestern) with the Eagles' 87-78 triumph over the University of Wisconsin-Superior (7-9, 4-4) inside the Ericksen Center. Northwestern improved to 13-3 overall on the year and 6-2 in loop play.

Senior forward Kyle Ooms (Hollandale, MN/Albert Lea High School) also made history, as he joined the 500 rebound club at UNW after pulling down 14 boards.

Trailing 31-18 with 8:18 remaining in the first half, UNW closed out the half on a 22-8 run to take a 41-39 lead into the locker room. Despite playing just eight minutes in the opening half, Clay Elrod (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) dropped 10 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Eagles.

In a back-and-forth second half, a Michael Carney (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) three with 6:43 remaining put the Eagles out front and they never looked back, securing their 13th win of the season.

Ooms powered his way to a double-double, pouring in 29 points to go along with his 14 rebounds. Will Gisler (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) scored 15 points, while Carney (13) and Elrod (10) were also in double figures.

UNW shot 47.5 percent from the floor, while UWS finished the afternoon at 44.6 percent.

The Eagles will remain at home next weekend, hosting Finlandia (Friday) and Northland (Saturday). Saturday's contest with Northland will be Hoops Hysteria on campus. Fans can find more information on next weekend's happenings at www.unweagles.com
