Second Half Surge Propels Eagles Past Knights

NEW ULM, Minn. – The University of Northwestern football team (3-1, 3-0 UMAC) exploded for 48 second-half points to defeat host Martin Luther (1-3, 0-3 UMAC), 55-14, Saturday afternoon and remain unbeaten in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play.

The Eagles outgained the Knights 488-245, holding the MLC option-attack in check.

With Jacob Fettig (Waconia, Minn./Waconia)'s 1-yard touchdown plunge being the only score for either side in the first half, the Eagles offense came alive in the second half. Fettig added a second score in the third, finding paydirt from a yard out.

Grant Schoen (Independence, Minn. /Orono) delivered a pair of second half strikes, connecting with Caleb Couwenhoven (Blaine, Minn./Fridley) on a 53-yard bomb in the third quarter and Cody Carlson (Dallas Center, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) on a 15-yard toss early in the fourth to lead the UNW air attack. The senior signal caller finished 10-of-16 for 242 yards.

Freshman BJ Foster (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) led UNW's ground game, churning up 95 yards on 17 carries, while scoring on an 8-yard scamper early in the fourth. Fellow backs, Zac Cash (Highlands Ranch, Colo. /Mountain Vista ) and Jordan Joseph (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael Albertville), each ran to a second half touchdown to contribute to the offensive effort.

Defensive lineman Ben Johnson capped the day off with a 15-yard scoop-and-score to capitalize on a late Knight turnover.

Rover Nick Swore (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) was flying all over the field Saturday, totaling 10 tackles to lead the defensive charge, while Ben Greener (Foley, Minn./Home School) added nine – including two tackles for loss. Austin Stubbs (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) recorded his third pick of the season from his cornerback position, while Kyle Anenson (Chanhassen, Minn./Chanhassen), Greener and Johnson all racked up a sack.

The Eagles will return home to host Iowa Wesleyan next Saturday for Homecoming. Kickoff at Reynolds Field is slated for 1 p.m.
