UNW Splits on Day One of Augsburg Tournament

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Northwestern volleyball team split on the opening day of Augsburg Tournament Friday. The Eagles swept the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the first match, before falling 3-1 to host Augsburg in the nightcap.

Game 1 vs. UW-Eau Claire (25-21,25-23, 27-25)

Northwestern came away with a 3-0 victory over the Blugolds with close set scores for all three games. The Eagles fought for their sweep with 43 kills on the board, with Peterson claiming her sixth double double for the season. Lydia Palkert (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) scored 10 kills with the second best hitting percentage at .304, behind Toria Gillson (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Christian)'s .333 percentage. Peterson, Jackie Foster (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City), and Abby Vander Galien (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) led the Eagles with double digit digs apiece.

Game 2 vs. Augsburg (25-20, 22-25, 11-25, 22-25)

After Northwestern took the opening set, Augsburg bounced back and took the next three sets to avenge last Saturday's loss to the Eagles.

Peterson led the way once again, notching her seventh double double with 15 kills and 18 digs. Shanay Gonder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) also reached double digits in the kills department, slamming 10 kills with a .400 percentage. Sophomores Jackie Foster (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) and Abby Vander Galien (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) tallied 25 and 16 digs, respectively.

The Eagles will play a pair of games Saturday in Minneapolis, taking on UW-La Crosse at 11 a.m. and St. Thomas at 3 p.m. Live links to follow Saturday's action can be found at www.unweagles.com
