Box Score 2 West St. Paul, Minn – The University of Northwestern came away with a win and their first conference loss this Friday at the UMAC Crossover event for day two. With a huge offensive game against Martin Luther College, the Eagles barely lost to the University of Minnesota Morris. The Eagles came away 3-1 for the two day event.
Game 1: UNW: 8, MLC: 0 In the top of the third,
Kaylee Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley Watkins), Jen Ankrom, and
Erica Brahan (Sheboyagan, Wis./Sheboyagen North) all earned singles. Forcier scored, and with only one out, Northwestern had a prime opportunity to score more runs. However with two consecutive outs, the Eagles left runners on second and third, as UNW led 1-0.
Lauren Silbernick (Osakis, Minn./Osakis) held Martin Luther to zero hits in the bottom of the third, quickly moving into the fourth.
Guerkink nailed a single down right field and advanced on an overthrown ball by the right fielder and stole a base on the next play, quickly putting her on third.
Courtney Guetter (Fairmont, Minn./Fairmont) earned a single, scoring in Guerkink for the second run of the game. With zero outs, Northwestern's momentum kept building. With Ankrom's single to left field, Threlkeld and Guetter scored.
Lauren Silbernick (Osakis, Minn./Osakis) walked and advanced to second on a passed ball, advancing Ankrom and Forcier, as Forcier scored her second run of the day. Colleen Felheim came in with a rocket to right center field, earning two RBIs as Silbernick and Ankrom were the last to score that inning. Northwestern led 7-0 over MLC, earning six runs that inning alone.
Forcier reached on base because of a walk, advanced on a wild pitch. With Ankrom's deep left center hit, Forcier scored. Ankrom advanced to third due to two Knights' errors. With two outs to go, UNW was in scoring position but grounded out to the short stop, ending the top of the fifth ahead eight runs.
Lauren Silbernick (Osakis, Minn./Osakis) claimed the victory for the Purple and Gold, ending the fifth in a three-pitch inning.
Game 2: UNW: 3, UMM: 4Northwestern scored two in the second inning, putting the first two points on the board. Lokke started with a single, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Feldheim. Guerkink doubled to right center, scoring Lokke in. Larkin walked the next at-bat and with a wild pitch on the next batter, Larkin and Guerkink advanced. Guetter tallied an RBI as she grounded out to first with two outs. With another groundout, UNW led 2-0 over Morris.
Morris responded quickly with a run in the top of the third, but
Ann Lokke (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) was able to hold them to a single run. Forcier was up first in the third, doubling to left center. Brahan walked and Lokke singled through the left side. As she was advanced due to the Cougars' throwing error, Forcier scored. With no additional runs, the Purple and Gold still held the 3-1 lead going into the top of the fourth.
UMM scored another run in the fourth, sixth, and seventh inning and the Eagles unfortunately did not recover from their 4-3 deficit, losing to Minnesota Morris.
Northwestern (3-1 UMAC) will play again this Tuesday in Duluth, Minnesota as they face the College of St. Scholastica for a doubleheader, starting at 3 p.m.
