Box Score 2 ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern lost a heartbreaker in game one against Augsburg University, losing 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Field. In the second game of the doubleheader, the Eagles held the Auggies off until the seventh inning, when nine runs were scored.
Game 1: AUG 4, UNW 3Silbernick threw her strikeout of the day with the first Auggie at-bat. The sophomore pitcher held the Auggies scoreless in the first two innings.
Kaylee Forcier (Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley Watkins) singled, followed by an Emily Guerkink sacrifice bunt. Forcier advanced to third but with two outs on the board, the Eagles struck out, remaining scoreless in the second inning. Moving ahead to the bottom of the third,
Courtney Guetter (Fairmont, Minn./Fairmont) secured a single and stole second on the next at bat.
Megan Threlkeld (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) singled to left field and advanced to second due to an Auggie fielding error. Threlkeld and Guetter ran home with a center field error, scoring the first two runs of the day. Forcier advanced home with an error from Augsburg's catcher, but due to a strikeout, the third inning ended with Northwestern leading 3-0 over Augsburg.
The visitors made a small comeback with a homerun from Lindsay Helbach, scoring in Jenna Orth with no outs on the board. Fortunately, the home team was able to hold off their offense and ended the top of the fifth with only two runs, still leading 3-2.
Megan Threlkeld (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) started the lineup with a single, followed by a Forcier bunt. Forcier made it to second, advancing Threlkeld to third, but the Auggies threw her out in the next play with a hit to left field. Northwestern wasn't able to score any runs ending the fifth.
Augsburg's Bekka Kelly got on base with a single and stole two bases. With Kelly on third with no outs, she scored with a fielder's choice to first, putting the first out on the board. Augsburg kept the momentum rolling with a double hit. With the next at-bat, Augsburg racked another single, with their runner on second stealing third. On the next play, the visitors scored their fourth run of the game, claiming the lead.
Silbernick fired a hit to center field, starting off the bottom of the sixth with a single.
Ellen Larkin (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) hit a line drive to the gap, earning a double and advancing Silbernick to third. With two outs on the board, the Eagles fought to tie the game at fours, but feel short.
Coming into the game as the relief pitcher,
Ann Lokke (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) allowed two runners on base but threw a runner out at home making it two Auggie outs. With a pass ball, Augsburg's two runners advanced a base, but Northwestern held them to no runs before heading into the bottom of the seventh. With three consecutive outs, Northwestern was unable to overcome their deficit, the Eagles fell 4-3 in a tight match-up against Augsburg.
Game 2: AUG 9, UNWWith a runner on third with two outs to go, Anna Lokke survived the inning, allowing no runs in the second inning. The Eagles held Augsburg to zero with their first double play of the day, with a 643 in the top of the third inning. Forcier earned herself a single with a shot to right field.
Ann Lokke (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) had a great hit to left, but Augsburg's left fielder made a catch, bringing it to two outs. With a bunt from
Colleen Feldheim (Northfield, Ill./Loyola Academy), Forcier was thrown out at second, ending the third. Both team still remained scoreless.
With two fielding errors, one Auggie remained on second with two outs on the board. With two stolen bases on the next at-bat, Erica Brahan made a crucial catch, moving into the bottom of the fourth.
Ann Lokke (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) continued to be a threat to the Augsburg offense, in the next two innings. Leading off the bottom of the fifth, Erica Brahan earned a single with a grounder to left field.
Maddie Pierro (Andover, Minn./Legacy) executed a bunt, advancing Brahan to second. Unfortunately, the visitors held the Eagles to zero runs. Skipping to the seventh, Augsburg quickly loaded the bases with zero outs and walked the next two runs. Sarah Buchner launched a hit into left field, scoring two more runs for the Maroon. With an Augsburg double, their fifth run was added to the scoreboard. Feeding off the zero out momentum, the next hitter earned a double as well, bringing to score to 8-0. With three consecutive outs, Northwestern finally ended the dreaded inning that put them in a eight run hole.
Emily Guerkink led the lineup with a walk for the Eagles. Brahan made a grounder to left field, but Guerkink was thrown out at second. With an interference with the throw, Brahan was called out at first, putting two outs on the board. With a pop up in the next at bat, Northwestern fell 9-0 to Augsburg.
