ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern defeated the University of Minnesota Morris 67-63 in overtime at the Ericksen Center Saturday night. The Eagles improved to 7-2 overall with an undefeated 3-0 start in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
The Eagles reached their highest advantage with 12 points over the Cougars in the third period with 1:13 left on the clock. UMM made a 14 point offensive push in the fourth, launching the visitors to a 55-53 lead with 46 seconds on the clock.
Courtney Cunard (Missouri Valley, Iowa/Missouri Valley) saved the Eagles from their last minute deficit, securing two free throws to tie the game at 55 with 36 seconds on the board. The two teams hit their 10th tie of the game with 1:43 left in overtime, as both teams sat at 63 points. With four consecutive free throws, Northwestern sealed the deal, winning 67-63.
Sophomore
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) scored 23 points, shooting 8 for 14 in the field.
Kim Campbell (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) led Northwestern in rebounds with 10, contributing with five assist on the floor. Northwestern, who usually shoots the ball well from long range, shot just under 18 percent from downtown. The Eagles' 20 points from behind the stripe helped compensate, in addition to their 18 steals as a team. Berglund also swiped nine steals, which ties for the second-most steals in a game in Northwestern history.
The Eagles will host St. Catherine University next Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. for a final game before Christmas break.
