ST. PAUL — The University of Northwestern women's basketball team won a tight 59-57 game over Macalester College Tuesday night. With 40 minutes of back and forth battling, the Eagles came out on top in the final minute of play.
The Eagles led a low-scoring first quarter over the Scots with a score of 13-3 inside the Ericksen Center. At the half, UNW led 30-23 as
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) led with 12 points on the floor. Macalester kept pushing offensively, cutting Northwestern's lead to 43-42 after three quarters. The blue and orange took the 51-50 lead with 6:30 left in the game, but
Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) responded with two timely shots from downtown, reclaiming a 56-51 lead with five minutes remaining.
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) led the Eagles with 17 points, with
Regan Cooper (Pella, Iowa/Pella) also adding 10 points to the leader's board.
Courtney Cunard (Missouri Valley, Iowa/Missouri Valley) led in rebounds with 11 for the night. UNW and MAC shot nearly identical percentages for the night.
The Scots' 38.7 percent from the field and 27.3 percent of threes, slightly better than the Eagles' 38.3 percent of field goals and 26.3 percent of three-pointers. Northwestern's 8 for 12 performance from behind the line edged out Macalester's 3 for 13.
The Eagles will travel to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin next Friday for the first conference game of the season with a 7:30 p.m. start time.
