Second Half Surge Pushes UNW Past Marian

ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team outscored visiting Marian University 47-29 in the second half en route to defeating the Sabres 87-66 in a non-conference contest inside the Ericksen Center Friday night. The win moves UNW to 3-0, while MU falls to 2-1.

Holding a three-point advantage heading into the locker room, the Eagles came out on fire, torching the nets with 47 second-half points. The Eagles shot the ball extremely well, shooting just under 59 percent from the field, including a blazing 47.8 percent from downtown.

UNW once again had a balanced attack, as four players reached double figures, including Will Gisler (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville)'s team-high 19 points and Kyle Ooms (Hollandale, MN/Albert Lea High School)' 18. Clay Elrod (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) went a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and cashed in on all three 3-point attempts on his way to finishing with 16. Ooms also pulled down seven boards. Freshman Anderson Bazile Jr. (Houston, Tex./San Antonio Reagan) came in off the bench and scored six points in the final three minutes of play. Cody Sprenger (Grey Eagle, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) dished out six assists to lead all players in 33 minutes of action.

Josh Creed scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Marian.

The Eagles will turn around and host Concordia-Moorhead Saturday afternoon. Tip inside the Ericksen Center is set for 3 p.m.
