UNW comeback falls short in 58-51 loss to Augsburg

ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern fell 58-51 to Augsburg College Tuesday night regardless of a comeback in the final 20 minutes of play.

After the first quarter, the Eagles trailed 21-8 with a slow start to the game as the Auggies were explosive on offense. Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) started gaining momentum for the Eagles with a shot from downtown with four minutes left in the second quarter. Trailing 23-15, Northwestern slowly decreased their deficit. The Eagles' Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) had a breakaway with 25 seconds left in the half, bringing the score to 27-19 at halftime.

Head Coach Aaron Kahl's locker room talk took a 180 turn as Northwestern made an incredible comeback, taking a 38-34 lead over the Auggies. Jessica Cole (Altoona, Iowa/Southeast Polk) came out firing with 12 points in the third quarter alone. Augsburg wasn't finished fighting regaining a 53-47 with a few shots behind the arc, forcing a UNW timeout with just under three minutes remaining.  Northwestern was not able to recover the lead, falling 58-51 in the fourth.

Jessica Cole (Altoona, Iowa/Southeast Polk) (12) and Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) (10) led the Eagles in points. Regan Cooper (Pella, Iowa/Pella) amassed 13 rebounds, with Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield)'s nine right behind her. Northwestern shot below 30 percent in field goal and three-point categories, slightly behind Northwestern.

Northwestern faces Buena Vista University at home Friday night at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles will then host Hamline University on Saturday at 5 p.m.
