ST. PAUL, Minnesota – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team opened up the season with a 76-75 exhibition victory over Dordt College Saturday night.
Northwestern had four players scoring in the double digits. Sophomore
Jessica Cole (Altoona, Iowa/Southeast Polk) led the pack with 13, followed by senior
Regan Cooper (Pella, Iowa/Pella) with 12.
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and
Courtney Cunard (Missouri Valley, Iowa/Missouri Valley) both came away with 10 apiece. Berglund led in steals for both teams with a total of five, double the amount of any other player.
Emily Van Lith (Minot, N.D./Our Redeemers) led in blocks with two for the night.
Dordt's Paige Engbers and Cassidy Vredevoogd tied at 15 points apiece, leading both teams on the scoreboard. Northwestern shot 48.3 percent in the field, compared to Dordt's 39.4 percent. Dordt surpassed UNW's three-point percentage shooting 38.7 percent over UNW's 18.2 percent.
Although this exhibition contest does not count for Northwestern, it will count for Dordt because of their membership in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Head Coach Aaron Kahl honored Dordt Colege's Head Coach, Katie FeWitt-Severson before tonight's game. DeWitt-Severson, a Northestern alumnus, coached her first collegiate game as head coach. The 2009-10 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Player of the Year has her name stamped all over the record books at Northwestern – most notably in the 1,000 point club, a milestone she reached in just three seasons (2008-11) on the hardwood in St. Paul. Her 1,637 career points rank fourth all-time on the career scoring list.
Northwestern will officially begin their season contests on Saturday, November 14th at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. The Eagles will tip off at 6 p.m.
