ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern triumphed over Buena Vista University in a tight 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon for Homecoming weekend. Both teams started the night at 13-7 records for the season.
Northwestern won 25-17 in the first set and dropped the second set 25-23 to the Beavers. The Eagles hit a low .114 hitting percentage, allowing BVU to tie the match at one game apiece. Northwestern managed to secure the third set regardless of low percentages yet again, finishing 25-20. The Beavers were determined in the fourth set finishing three points ahead Northwestern bringing the teams to a fifth set. With their most consistent hitting of the day, the Eagles gained a lead in the fifth battling for the victory.
Northwestern's
Lindsey Peterson (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) and
Abby Vander Galien (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) came away with double doubles.
Leesa Hulstrand (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) (22)and
Kaelyn Kilbo (Delano, Minn./Delano) (29) both tallied double digit assists.
Shanay Gonder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) and
Faith Vander Galien (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) shined for the middles, both hitting above the .400 mark.
The Eagles will play Bethany Lutheran on Tuesday night in Mankato with a start time of 7 p.m. UNW will face Hamline University on Friday night in St. Paul before hosting again on Saturday afternoon as they play Northland College for more UMAC play.
