ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern defense held Westminster to a season-low 10 points and 207 yards of total offense and
Grant Schoen (Independence, Minn. /Orono) threw three touchdown passes – two of those going to Joe Sutton (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde St. Margaret's) – as the Eagles defeated the visiting Blue Jays, 27-10, Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Field. The Eagles improve to 6-2 overall and 6-1 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, while Westminster drops to 5-3 overall and 5-2 in league play.
UNW got on the board with six minutes remaining in the first quarter as Schoen hit Sutton on a 4-yard fade route. The touchdown was set up by a
Matt Fox (Roxbury, N.J./Hillcrest Academy) interception deep in Westminster territory. Schoen's second touchdown toss went for 48 yards to Caleb Couwenhowen in the second quarter to put UNW up 13-0. The long pass capped an eight-play, 92-yard drive.
Jordan Joseph (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael Albertville) found paydirt from three yards out on Northwestern's opening drive of the second half to give the Eagles a 20-7 advantage. Sutton and Schoen hooked up again in the fourth on a 7-yard strike, as Sutton made an outstanding catch along the sideline in the end zone to secure the win.
Ben Greener (Foley, Minn./Home School) had another strong day for the defense, as the junior was in on 13 tackles.
Luke Sommerlot (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area ) recorded eight tackles, including a tackle for loss, while
Grant Stroud (Moorhead, Minn./Hillcrest Academy) and
Austin Warner (Fridley, Minn./Fridley) were in on seven stops each.
Schoen finished 14-of-28 for 167 yards, with seven of those completions going to Sutton (61 yards). Couwenhoven racked up 82 yards on four catches.
Chris Simon-Wallace (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) led a balanced ground attack with 51 yards on 10 carries.
The Eagles will travel to Greenville next Saturday for their final regular season road trip of the season. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. in Greenville, Ill.
