GREENVILLE, Ill. – The University of Northwestern defense stopped Greenville's two-point conversion attempt with 1:48 remaining in the fourth quarter to help the Eagles escape the Land of Lincoln with a 21-19 victory Saturday afternoon. It is the first time in program history that UNW has won at Greenville.
After the Eagles jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead, the Panthers stormed back in the final 30 minutes of play, but a gritty effort from Northwestern helped UNW move to 7-1 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play.
Caleb Couwenhoven (Blaine, Minn./Fridley) continues to be a spark on offense, as the senior hauled in a pair of
Grant Schoen (Independence, Minn. /Orono) first half touchdown passes. Couwenhoven's first touchdown grab covered 55 yards, while his second came with 1:58 remaining in the first half on a 7-yard toss from Schoen.
Zac Cash (Highlands Ranch, Colo. /Mountain Vista ) scored early in the second quarter on a 27-yard scamper to put the Eagles up 14-0. Cash had a big day on the ground, as the senior racked up 126 yards on 17 carries for an impressive 7.4 yards per carry average. It's Cash's second time going over the century mark this season, as he ran for 135 yards against Crown.
Ben Greener (Foley, Minn./Home School) bettered his 2015 resume with a monster performance to lead the defense, as the junior recorded 17 tackles and a pass breakup. Ben Johnson recorded a pair of sacks, while
Grant Stroud (Moorhead, Minn./Hillcrest Academy) was in on 12 stops.
Schoen finished 10-of-25 for 127 yards in the matinee. Couwenhoven finished with three receptions for 67 yards, while
Cody Carlson (Dallas Center, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) grabbed three passes for 51 yards.
The Eagles will close out their regular season next week when Eureka College travels to Reynolds Field. Kickoff is set for 12 noon.
