ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win over visiting UW-Superior on Senior Night Wednesday inside the Ericksen Center. UNW won by set scores of 25-18, 25-15 and 25-11 en route to moving to 5-0 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play.
UNW honored its three seniors (
Lizzy Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian ),
Lydia Palkert (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) and
Faith Vander Galien (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian)) prior to first serve.
Shanay Gonder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) continued her strong play, as the junior slammed 13 kills and added five blocks to lead the Eagle attack. Gonder compiled an impressive .600 hitting percentage.
Lindsey Peterson (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) racked up a double-double, tallying 11 kills and 12 digs.
Abby Vander Galien (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) was strong defensively, recording 15 digs.
Lizzy Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian ) posted a pair of service aces, while
Lydia Palkert (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) and
Faith Vander Galien (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) put down eight kills apiece. Palkert hit a .455 clip in the win.
UNW's strong presence at the net held the Yellowjackets to a team hitting percentage of .041, while the Eagles finished the night hitting .343.
The Eagles will hit the road Saturday to take on St. Scholastica. First serve in Duluth is set for 3 p.m.
