Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS – After last weekend's 3-1 start to the 2014 season, Friday was not a good day for the University of Northwestern volleyball team. The Eagles lost to Augsburg College for the second time in a week before capping off the night with a 3-1 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
The now-22th ranked Auggies opened their own invitational with a 3-1 victory over the Eagles, using strong offense against a UNW team that struggled to produce its own points throughout the course of the four sets. UNW's lone set win came in the third when the Eagles won 25-15. Augsburg claimed the other rounds in 25-18, 25-21 and 25-23 fashion.
Lizzy Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian ) had 47 assists, but Northwestern was only able to hit .134 in the match. Defensively,
Lizzy Potratz (Oshkosh, Wis./Valley Christian ) was all over for UNW, finishing the match with 26 of the team's 84 digs.
Northwestern led early in the second set, but an 11-7 lead eventually turned into a 21-18 deficit before Augsburg won the set by four points. UNW jumped out to another early lead in the third, but the margin stuck this time as the Eagles finished with a 10 point edge. Northwestern and Augsburg were tied 23-23 in the fourth and final set, but the Auggies took the final two points to claim the match.
Against the Yellowjackets from Superior, who will join the UMAC beginning in 2015-2016, Northwestern had its ups and downs. Two of the four sets finished with 25-23 scores as Superior and the Eagles each won one of those rounds. UNW found itself in a 2-0 hole, facing a loss sooner than hoped for before rebounding for a two-point win in Set 3. Superior's 25-19 victory in the fourth set bumped the Yellowjackets to a 4-1 overall record while dropping Northwestern, who received 49 votes in Tuesday's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 poll, to 3-3.
Hallie Mueth (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) paced the Eagles with 12 kills, while
Lindsey Peterson (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) and
Faith Vander Galien (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) added 11 more apiece. Potratz again topped the team with 18 digs as the Northwestern middles continued to find success on the block as
Shanay Gonder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) and
Cari Miller (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) tallied eight and seven blocks.
Saturday will offer a chance at redemption for UNW as the Eagles close out their weekend with a 12 noon match against Gustavus Adolphus College at Augsburg. Live stats of that match will be available
