Box Score ST. PAUL— In their first conference match-up of the season, the University of Northwestern won 3-0 over Northland College on Friday night at Reynolds Field as the Eagles' seniors had a successful first half.
Northwestern held possession for a majority of the first half with five shots on goal in comparison to Northland's solo shot. Senior
Robbie Denniston (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) put the Purple and Gold on the board in the 18th minute with a hard shot to the bottom left corner, assisted by freshman
Ivan Bautista (Laredo, Tex/Lyndon B. Johnson). As a defender, Denniston's two goals this season are the only goals of his career. Second to score was
David Mooers (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) with 18 minutes left on the clock. This marks Mooers' first career goal as he joined the squad this year as a senior. The Eagles went into the half with a 2-0 advantage over the Lumberjacks.
With a slow start to the second period, both sides were quiet on offense.
Matthew McCann (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) finally broke the silent spell and shot a rocket to the upper left corner thanks to a great cross by
Andres Almarza (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Christian) with 11 minutes left on the clock. Purple and Gold's defense proved to be successful as they held off the Lumberjacks for all 90 minutes of play.
Shane Coleman (Wyoming, Minn./Homeschool) earned his first shutout between the pipes this evening with two saves.
The win marked Northwestern's first win of both the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) and overall regular season. The Eagles will host St. Scholastica tomorrow afternoon at 2:15 p.m for an additional conference game.
