Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – The Northwestern softball season came to an abrupt end on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles lost to fourth seeded Northland College 11-2 in an elimination game at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Postseason Tournament. UNW ends its 2014 campaign with a 16-23 record.
Northwestern was in trouble right off the bat as Northland hit three home runs in its first opportunity in the first inning. Carolyn Malecha' three-run bomb, the LumberJills third of that frame, really hurt the Eagles and pitcher
Lauren Silbernick (Osakis, Minn./Osakis), who didn't make it out of the first inning.
Northland added a run in both the second and third innings before capping the game off with a three-run fifth inning.
Northwestern's two runs came in the third and fifth frames.
Kelsey Stoltman (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) earned an RBI with a single that scored
Colleen Feldheim (Northfield, Ill./Loyola Academy) in the third, while
Megan Threlkeld (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville)'s double to center scored
Ellen Larkin (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) in the fifth.
Kaia Larson (Ramsey, Minn./Meadow Creek) came in to relieve Silbernick and worked the rest of the game, facing 24 batters.
The young UNW squad now has a complete year under its belt, but the Eagles will have to say goodbye to graduating seniors Stoltman and
Erin Kleinjan (Avon, Minn./Holdingford), two thirds off head coach
Alicia du'Monceaux's starting outfield. The Eagles do have a positive to look forward to in that a brand new, artificial turf field will await them when next year's fall ball begins at Reynolds Field.
