Softball looks ahead to UMAC Tournament following loss to St. Kate's

Box Score

WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern softball team's lone game before this weekend's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament wasn't a good one for the Eagles. UNW was out-hit 14-2 in a 10-0, five-inning final against St. Catherine University.

While Northwestern's bats went silent, the Wildcats were busy scoring runs. After a three-run first inning, St. Kate's added six more in the second. One more run in the bottom of the third frame was all the Wildcats, who were celebrating Senior Day, needed to secure the abbreviated victory.

Northwestern's two hits went to Morgan Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Ellen Larkin (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian), both of whom finished the game 1-2 in the batter's box. Larkin's hit came in the third inning on a single down the right field line before Pfaff singled up the middle in the fourth.

While the Eagles were without error on defense, Kaia Larson (Ramsey, Minn./Meadow Creek) was battered from her spot in the pitcher's circle. Larson yielded 12 hits and nine runs in two innings of work before Lauren Silbernick (Osakis, Minn./Osakis) finished the final two innings, allowing two hits and a run during her time on the rubber.

Now 16-21 on the season, Northwestern will head north to Duluth, Minn. for the UMAC Tournament, which took on a new look on Thursday afternoon with an adjusted schedule due to weather issues at Kenwood Field. The Eagles will now start their weekend with a 2 p.m. contest against the University of Minnesota Morris on Friday afternoon in their lone game of the day. Northwestern will be back in action on Saturday with the championship game scheduled for midday on Sunday.
