Eagles wrap up UMAC series against Northland with extra innings win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northwestern baseball team wrapped up its three-game series against Northland College with a rare Sunday doubleheader. Both games of Sunday's twin bill followed suit from Saturday's extra innings affair, with Games 2 and 3 also going 10 innings. UNW was on the short side of an 8-7 score in Sunday's first round before closing out the series with an 11-10 victory.

Each team had a big seventh inning in the first game. With Northland ahead 2-0, Northwestern went off for six runs in its seventh frame at-bat, using four hits and a LumberJacks error to claim a 6-2 lead. Taylor MacMurray earned a walk with the bases loaded to start the scoring before Andy Haagenson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley)'s double to right center field brought in two runs. Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian), UNW's next batter, was good for two RBI of his own with a single up the middle that scored Haagenson and Aaron Rau (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge).

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Jacks tied things up with four runs in the bottom half of the frame as relief pitcher Mark Meredith struggled to find the strike zone. Meredith walked three of the six batters he faced, one of which brought in a run. Drew Tennyson (Stuartevant, Wis./Christian Life) relieved Meredith, but Northland was able to get a two-score double in before Tennyson struck out the last LumberJacks batter of the inning.

As was the case on Friday, neither team led after nine innings so the end result was sent into overtime. The Eagles were able to score a run in their 10th frame at-bat with Brady Arneson (Fosston, Minn./Fosston) scoring from second base on Aaron Rau (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge)'s single to left.

After a leadoff hit by Northland, UNW's Troy Nelson (Buena Park, Calif. /Buena Park) walked Nathan Brown to give the home team runners on first and second with no outs. A sacrifice bunt put both of those runners in scoring position and a single through the right side did the trick, bringing both home to win the game.

TJ Studer (Perham, Minn/Perham) got the nod to start the game on the hill for Northwestern. Studer went six innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out six. After Meredith and Tennyson worked the seventh, Nelson was on the rubber for the final two and two-thirds innings while receiving credit for the loss.

Mike Studer and Matt Doss (Pillager, Minn./Pillager) each had two hits for the Eagles, who out-hit Northland 10-8.

Game 2 of the day featured yet another scoring spree, but this time it was UNW on top after another extra-innings finish.

Instead of one big inning for each team, both Northwestern and Northland scattered their 21 combined runs throughout the three hour and 30 minute contest. The LumberJacks were good for two runs in each of the first five innings while the Eagles scored the bulk of their runs in the middle frames, chalking up at least one run in frames 4-8. Trailing 10-5 after five innings, Northwestern went on a run and never looked back as the Eagles scored six unanswered runs to win the game.

Mike Studer was good for two RBI in the game, but it was Rau and Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) who came on with the bat. Rau posted three hits, scoring twice while Sutterer finished 3-5 in the batter's box with the team's second RBI in the fourth inning.

With the score tied 10-10 in the 10th, Osborn took a two-out walk before an error by Northland's Peter Aerts allowed the sophomore to score from first for ultimately the winning run. Tennyson, who had been on the mound since the fifth inning, worked a one-two-three bottom half of the 10th frame, getting three straight ground balls to shortstop Haagenson to earn the victory.

The LumberJacks peppered Eagles starter Connor Olson (Mahtomedi, Minn/Mahtomedi) with nine hits and seven runs over the course of his four-inninng start before Tennyson's entrance.

With only one Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) series left on Northwestern's calendar – next Friday and Saturday versus Martin Luther College, the Eagles will take a break from league play with a doubleheader against Macalester College on Tuesday, April 29 starting at 3 p.m. in St. Paul.
