Softball encouters deja vu in doubleheader losses to Macalester

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. PAUL – In a swing of unfortunate events, the University of Northwestern softball team encountered nearly the same results against Macalester College as it did with Tuesday's split doubleheader against Northland College and the College of St. Scholastica. The Eagles lost the first game of Wednesday's twin bill 8-0 before losing a 13-12 Game 2 battle in the final inning.

Northwestern was out-hit 11-3 in Game 1, falling victim to a six-run third inning to the Scots in a game that finished early due to eight-run rule after five innings. Macalester started the day's scoring with a grand slam home run while Miranda Stokes pitched three frames to earn the win in the pitcher's circle.

UNW countered with the combination of Lauren Silbernick (Osakis, Minn./Osakis) and Ann Lokke (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis), who together allowed six earned runs and 11 hits. In the batter's box, the Eagles' three hits came off the bats of Kelsey Stoltman (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View), Megan Threlkeld (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) and Maddie Pierro (Andover, Minn./Legacy).

Northwestern got on the board in Game 2 of the cool, breezy and rainy day on Snelling Avenue, but had its heart broken for the second consecutive day. After scoring seven runs in the top of the sixth inning, UNW owned a 12-8 lead before Macalester scored four runs in its last at-bat in the bottom of the seventh to earn the doubleheader sweep.

Threlkeld and Jennifer Ankrom (New Hampton, Iowa/New Hampton) both had three runs batted in for the Eagles. Two of Ankrom's RBI came in a third inning single, while both Kaylee Foricer and Stoltman came home on a play off of Threlkeld's bat in the sixth frame.

Kaia Larson (Ramsey, Minn./Meadow Creek) went the first five innings on the rubber for Northwestern, allowing nine runs off eight hits. Silbernick threw the final inning and a third for the Eagles, giving up four runs on two hits, with three walks helping the Scots.

Now 13-20, Northwestern resumes its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) schedule on Saturday, April 26 with a doubleheader at Northland College in Ashland, Wis., with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
