Saints drop Eagles, 4-0, in series finale

Box Score

ST. PAUL – In what could be the final game on the current Reynolds Field, the University of Northwestern baseball team braved blustery conditions on Wednesday morning in a 4-0 loss to the College of St. Scholastica. The loss gives the Saints a series sweep over the Eagles, setting UNW back to 13-13 overall and 9-5 in UMAC play.

While being challenged by St. Scholastica ace Andy Davis, Northwestern starting pitcher Drew Tennyson (Stuartevant, Wis./Christian Life) held good composure in seven innings of work as the senior allowed just two runs in his outing. The Saints' first score came in the third inning after Trevor Bernsdorf tripled down the left field line and scored on Jordan Risse's single through the left side two batters later. Risse was good for another RBI in the fifth as his sacrifice fly allowed Austni Colvard to score from third after a leadoff walk.

Isaac Meredith (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) relieved Tennyson in the eighth inning and struggled slightly with his control as a pair of walks brought in St. Scholastica's third run of the game. Meredith was set to go one-two-three in the ninth, but an Eagles throwing error gave the Saints extra life that produced the final run, which was not charged to Meredith as being earned.

UNW was out-hit 9-6, with Aaron Rau (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) being the only Northwestern player to record multiple hits from the batter's box. Both Rau and Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) had a double on the day.

Northwestern will now turn its attention to a three-game series against Northland College this weekend, a UMAC battle that is scheduled to be played in Ashland, Wis. If field conditions and weather does not allow those games to be played on the shores of Lake Superior, there's a chance the series could be moved to Reynolds Field.
