Saints end Eagles' five-game win streak with doubleheader sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. PAUL – After a five-game winning streak, the University of Northwestern baseball team lost both games of an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, falling to first place College of St. Scholastica 15-3 and 9-1 at Reynolds Field.

The Eagles hung with the reigning league champions in the early going, and briefly led Game 1 after a Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) two-run home run in the third inning. St. Scholastica came back with a vengeance though, scoring seven runs in the top of the fourth to reclaim the first inning lead it once had. While the Saints had six hits that frame, Northwestern's defense didn't help with two errors.

The Saints forced UNW into zeros on the scoreboard the rest of the way out while Northwestern pitchers TJ Studer (Perham, Minn/Perham) and Corban Halbur (Richfield, Minn./Richfield) still had difficulty solving the Saints in the fifth and seventh innings. After having gotten to Studer in the fourth, CSS was good for three runs against last week's UMAC Pitcher of the Week in the fifth. Halbur was good for a one-two-three sixth frame before getting battered in a four-run seventh.

At the plate, Andy Haagenson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley) accounted for three of Northwestern's eight hits in the game, while Osborn's home run helped the transfer record two runs batted in and a pair of runs scored in four at-bats.

What hits were there for the Eagles in the first game started to go silent in Game 2 as UNW watched the Saints score more late-inning runs while being out-hit 13-4.

St. Scholastica started with a three-run third inning against UNW starter Troy Nelson (Buena Park, Calif. /Buena Park). The Saints used a pair of sacrifice flies to bring in two of those runs before adding another run in the top of the fourth thanks to Austin Colvard's first of three RBI in the game.

Trailing by four, Northwestern brought its lone run of the game home in the fifth. With Matt Doss (Pillager, Minn./Pillager) on second, Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian)'s shot through the left side of the infield allowed the sophomore to come in standing up.

The three-run difference on the scoreboard didn't last for long with the Saints scoring two runs in the sixth and three more between the eighth and ninth frames. Benjamin Jenney (Albertville, Minn./Maranatha Christian), who relieved Nelson on the hill after five and two-thirds innings, allowed the eighth inning score, which was unearned, before some early control issues for ninth inning pitcher Jesse Donahue (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) allowed the two runs to come in that round.

Nelson was charged for the loss, allowing five earned runs while striking out six during his time on the mound. Dan Wood worked three and one-third innings to get the win for St. Scholastica.

While UNW was good for only four hits, the defensive blunders started to add up for the Eagles in Game 2, as Northwestern finished with seven defensive mistakes.

Fortunately for Northwestern, the Eagles won't have long to think about Tuesday's games as UNW is set to complete the three-game series with an early 9 a.m. contest on Wednesday for Part 3 of the UMAC series. Wednesday's weather may have a say in that though, as predictions call for a 60 percent chance of precipitation by 9 a.m. with that number only growing in size as the morning continues.
