Eagles score big to complete weekend sweep of Crown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLOGNE, Minn. – The University of Northwestern baseball team completed its three-game sweep over Crown College on Saturday, defeating the Storm 5-1 and 16-6. The wins improve the Eagles' Upper Midwest Athletic Conference record to 9-2.

Trailing 1-0 after a fourth-inning run by the Storm, Northwestern turned its offensive production late in the nine-inning game, bringing runs across in every round from the sixth frame on.

Mike Studer's RBI single in the sixth got things started for UNW, the visitors on the scoreboard. Studer's hit brought in Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) and Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian), giving Norhtwestern a one-run lead. Aaron Rau (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) followed Studer's production with an RBI hit of his own, singling in Andy Haagenson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley).

Ahead 3-1, Matt Doss (Pillager, Minn./Pillager) and Sutterer each followed suit in the final two innings. Doss's RBI single brought Studer home before a Sutterer single scored Rau for the fifth and final run of the game.

Andy Peterson (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) continued to build his arm strength back with a five-inning start on the mound, allowing six hits while striking out four en route to earning the victory. Isaac Meredith (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) yielded just one hit over two and one-thirds innings before Benjamin Jenney (Albertville, Minn./Maranatha Christian) wrapped up the game without allowing a hit.

Rau went 2-3 at the plate with two walks, helping Northwestern out-hit the Storm 9-7.

Game 2 was good for many more runs as well as a host of errors from both teams. UNW once again came from behind for the win, using a nine-run fifth frame to ultimately win by 10 in a shortened eight-inning game due to a 10-run rule.

After Crown had scored twice in the first inning, Northwestern matched the Storm's output with a two-run second, using an RBI groundout and a defensive error to score its first runs of the game. Following an Austin Adamson (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) sacrifice fly in the fourth, the big fifth inning came for the Eagles. Highlights of the frame included a two-run home run by Sutterer and six other UNW hits paired with a trio of Crown errors.

Leading 12-2, Northwestern gave up two runs in both the sixth and eighth innings, but a four-run eighth for the Eagles gave UNW enough of a pad for the game to end early. Rau and Andy Haagenson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley) both produced two-out RBI hits.

Adding to the long list of hits, runs and errors was Northwestern's tally of stolen bases, which reached 10. Taylor McMurray (Vadnais Heights, Minn./Totino-Grace) accounted for three of those stolen bases while Studer had two of the Eagles' doubles in the game.

Eagles head coach Dave Hieb threw three more pitchers, with Adam Johnson (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) earning his second straight win. Johnson went six innings in the start, allowing six hits while taking responsibility for three Crown runs. Corban Halbur (Richfield, Minn./Richfield) came on for just over an inning of work before Austin Barmore (Blain, Minn./Irondale) wrapped up the final two outs for Northwestern.

Haagenson and Adamson each contributed two hits to the Eagles' total of 12, while Studer went 3-3 with four runs scored.

Now 13-10, Northwestern returns home for a mid-week series against the College of St. Scholastica on Tuesday and Wednesday before heading to Lake Superior for another UMAC weekend at Northland College starting on Friday, April 25.
