MINNEAPOLIS – Day 2 of the Northwestern softball season didn't fare as well as the first day did as the Eagles dropped both games of a Saturday twin bill against the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at Augsburg College. UNW was the victim of the eight-run rule in an 11-2 Game 1 finish before La Crosse took the second game 9-2.
Northwestern scored runs in the fourth and fifth innings of the first game, but those weren't enough as the Eagles were out-hit 15-8 by the other Eagles from La Crosse, who ended the day with a 4-0 record.
Kelsey Stoltman (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) and
Ann Lokke (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) each recorded two hits and an RBI in the game, with Stoltman hitting a double in the fourth frame that scored Lokke.
Lauren Silbernick (Osakis, Minn./Osakis) took the loss in the pitcher's circle after allowing 11 hits and seven earned runs in three and one-third innings of work.
Kaia Larson (Ramsey, Minn./Meadow Creek) finished the game on the rubber, allowing two runs from the 11 batters she faced.
Northwestern was the first team to get on the board in the second game of the day, but the Eagles bats were again stricken with La Crosse owning a 10-6 advantage in hits.
Jennifer Ankrom (New Hampton, Iowa/New Hampton)'s single in the first inning brought
Megan Threlkeld (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) home from second after Threlkeld doubled to left field in her first at-bat.
Erin Kleinjan (Avon, Minn./Holdingford) was responsible for UNW's other run in the game as the senior blasted a solo home run over the right field fence in the second frame.
Despite Kleinjan's bomb, La Crosse brought in six runs in the first inning to quickly take away the Northwestern's one-run lead. La Crosse added two more runs in the bottom of the second frame and another in the third to solidify what would turn out to be a seven-run victory.
Lokke was charged with the loss in just one inning of work, with Larson finishing the game from the circle for the Eagles. Six of the nine runs scored by La Crosse were earned as UNW committed two errors.
Now 1-3 on the season, Northwestern will regroup for a few practices before heading south for its annual spring break trip to Clermont, Fla. where the Eagles will play nine games over the course of seven days. UNW's first contest in the Sunshine State will feature the Eagles against Ohio Northern University on Friday, March 7 at 7 p.m. (ET).
