Box Score ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – In a battle of neighbors, the University of Northwestern and Bethel University men's soccer teams endured the heat in Saturday's nonconference matchup, with Bethel taking the 4-1 upper hand over the visiting Eagles. UNW's goal early in the second half cut into the Royals' early lead, but it was not enough to reverse the final outcome.
Northwestern did not have much time to get comfortable in the contest as the home team on the scoreboard put its first tally up just 2:07 into the game after a header goal by Luke Chase. Just over five minutes later the BU offense struck again, and again at the fifteen-minute mark leaving the margin at 3-0 with 30 minutes left to play in the half. After the flurry of scoring, the Eagles fended off any more incoming attacks until the 28:46 point, when Bethel would post its final score of the period and game.
Coming out of halftime, the Purple and Gold put up a push of its own with
Sean Taylor (Sydney, Australia /Kenosha Christian Life ) netting his first goal of the season 26 seconds into play. As time played on the Eagles continued to force shots into the home team's defense, but BU withstood any momentum UNW could create, leaving the final outcome at 4-1 as both squads left the field.
The first 45 minutes of play saw the Northwestern visitors post three shots in comparison to Bethel's 10, but the second half was a different story with a 7-4 ratio in favor of the Eagles.
Both goalkeepers saw similar save totals, with
Shane Coleman (Wyoming, Minn./Homeschool) picking up credit for three in the first half on UNW's end of the field.
Northwestern (0-3) will continue pressing towards its first win as the group travels to Macalester College on Monday for another non-conference game against a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) foe. A 4:30 p.m. start time at Macalester Stadium is set for Monday's contest. Live video for the matchup can be viewed
