Box Score
ST. PAUL – On the stat sheet it looked like it was a nearly even game between the University of Northwestern men's soccer team and the University of St. Thomas squad, but it was three shots that proved to be the difference in the final score as the Eagles dropped their second contest of the season by a 4-1 margin.
UNW held the visitors off for the first 22 minutes of action, but Matt Bouche broke the scoring drought with a boot into the right corner of the goal. The Eagles kept forcing their own offensive attacks, but an own goal situation by the Tommies left Northwestern with a two-goal deficit with 10 minutes remaining in the first period.
The home team was far from rolling over, however, and as just seconds were remaining on the first half clock, a
Joshua Fryc (Harris, Minn./Homeschool) shot deflected off the St. Thomas goalkeeper and
Brandon Detweiler (Delano, Minn./Delano) seized the opportunity to lay the ball between the pipes. The goal, both the Eagles' first of the game and season game provided a momentum boost heading into intermission after a half which saw UNW post seven shots while the visiting team on the scoreboard notched nine.
Both teams took the field for the second half which featured a flurry of Northwestern shots, all stopped by UST's defense. On the other end of the field St. Thomas kept pressing in, which resulted in another goal, leaving the margin at 3-1 in the 57
th minute. Less than six minutes later the squad struck again, this time delivering the final score before the Eagles were able to get back on the board.
The Purple and Gold continued to pressure towards the Tommie goal, but it was not enough to break into the deficit. Northwestern finished the contest with 15 total shots while their opponent tallied 14 over the course of 90 minutes, but it was the three shots that found the UNW net that provided the final outcome.
On the defensive end,
Shane Coleman (Wyoming, Minn./Homeschool) picked up five saves in goal for the Eagles, while the two squads each tallied two corner kicks.
Northwestern (0-2) will continue its non-conference schedule with another Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponent on Saturday when it travels north on Snelling Avenue to face off with Bethel University in a 1 p.m. time slot.
