Second half is difference maker for men's soccer in 3-2 loss

Box Score

ST. PAUL – It was a tale of two halves. After a first half which saw the University of Northwestern men's soccer team hold Bethany Lutheran College scoreless while picking up a goal of its own, the second period saw the visiting Vikings score three consecutive goals to earn a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon.

After securing its first win of the season on Friday, UNW owned early control of the Saturday matinee as the team put up two shots and earned two corner kicks in the first 7:36 of action. Joshua Fryc (Harris, Minn./Homeschool) was the first Eagle to convert on the attack however, landing the home squad a 1-0 advantage at the 11:51 mark.

The Northwestern defense continued to hold strong for the remainder of the period and headed into halftime with lead security for the second time in two days.

As both teams reset for the second half the momentum was soon to change. A Northwestern foul in the box led to a penalty kick by Austin Eliason, a successful shot he landed into the home team's net. The Eagles posted two more shots as a counterattack, but another Purple and Gold miscue led to a second penalty kick situation. The Vikings were unable to convert on its second chance but a violation by the home team allowed a re-kick to take place, this time a success. That span of less than three minutes changed both the momentum and score with BLC taking a 3-1 lead.

Eric Fast (Eagan, Minn./Homeschool) proved UNW was not going to surrender easily at the 63:22 mark as he notched his first career goal to bring the game within one. The Eagles had a few more offensive chances but were unable to convert, leaving the final margin in favor of the visiting Bethany Lutheran squad.

Offensively, both teams were consistent with 4 corner kicks while BLC posted two more total shots than the home team on the scoreboard. The defense of Bethany Lutheran tallied seven saves in comparison to the Eagles' three.
Northwestern (1-5 overall) caps off its first weekend of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play with a 1-1 record which included its first win of the 2013 campaign. Head Coach Greg Wheaton and his team will return to the pitch on Friday, September 27 at 2 p.m. on the campus of Northland College.
