ROSEMOUNT, Minn. – The Northwestern College Softball team made it a perfect outing on Tuesday at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC), winning both its contests at the Irish Sports Dome in Rosemount, Minn. The Eagles kicked off the morning with a 7-3 victory over the College of St. Scholastica, and followed that with a 9-4 performance over Northland College.
The first contest of the morning saw St. Scholastica hold an early lead, picking up its first run in the top of the second, and tallying two more in the third. NWC first got on the board in its third inning with Kristen Sigurdsen sending a double to left center followed by a
Briana Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) single and
Megan VanHulzen (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center) reach on an error, sending Sigurdsen home.
Lauren Young (Shoreview, Minn./Concordia Academy) and
Morgan Pfaff (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) helped end the inning with another run, this time with Rodgers getting across home plate.
The home team on the scoreboard's big push came in the fourth as
Kelsey Stoltman (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) kicked off the top of the lineup by drawing a walk, while Sigurdsen and Rodgers each provided another hit. A defensive error provided a way for Stoltman to score, and Pfaff would earn credit for two more runs scored with a one-baser to right field before the end of the inning.
The final Northwestern push came in the sixth, as Young notched her second home run of the season and brought in Rodgers with the slam, securing what would end up being the final 9-4 score.
Molly Johnsen (Floodwood, Minn./Floodwood) earned the save in the win, striking out six batters while walking just one. With her fifth K of the day, Johnsen surpassed the program's previous single-season total of 139, set in 2008 by current assistant coach
Kelsey Hanson (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis). The sophomore has now accumulated 144 strikeouts in 21 contests, an average of 6.8 per game.
In the second round of play, NWC got down early after a big Northland first at-bat which saw the LumberJills post three runs off of four hits and one error, while the Eagles were unable to cut into the margin until the third. Young made her presence known again, adding a home run to her day's total.
The fourth saw another push for scoring, as the Purple and Gold took the lead for the first time. Stoltman sent a ball to center field, allowing Johnsen to reach home. Rodgers was the next Eagle to notch a scoring opportunity for the squad with with a double that scored two of her teammates and left the game at 4-3 in favor of NWC.
As the sixth inning wrapped up, Northwestern had received hits from the crew of Stoltman, Rodgers, and VanHulzen while also picking up one run. The seventh saw much of the same action as the team notched five more runs in an offensive performance that saw the entire NWC lineup have time at the plate. Even with a final run by Northland, the visitors on the board held a 9-4 upper hand that would provide the Eagles with its second win of the day.
Stoltman, Rodgers, and Pfaff led the way on offense with three hits apiece, while UMAC Player of the Week VanHulzen was one of three Eagles to bring in two runs in the latter event. Johnsen earned her second win of the day on the mound while tallying 11 strikeouts in 33 batters faced.
Northwestern (14-16 overall, 9-6 UMAC) will not have much time to recover as it will face Crown College on Wednesday at both 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. in the Irish Sports Dome (Rosemount, Minn.). Crown is slated to be the home team for both games.
