ST. PAUL, Minn. – In a contest that held fans in suspense until the final second ticked off the clock, the combination of a University of Northwestern men's soccer goal and key defensive stops by the Eagles proved to stand the test of time in a 1-0 victory over the University of Minnesota Morris Friday afternoon. Both teams posted very similar statistic totals, but it was one first-half shot that secured the outcome in favor of the home team.
UNW was on defense first as the Cougars posted the first two shots within 33 seconds which both resulted in saves by
Shane Coleman (Wyoming, Minn./Homeschool). Northwestern returned the favor and the squads jousted back and forth for the next time being, with neither team putting a mark on the scoreboard.
With just 29 seconds remaining in the half,
Joshua Fryc (Harris, Minn./Homeschool) provided his team with momentum as a result of his second goal of the 2013 campaign. The score sent the Eagles into the half with a 1-0 advantage that would eventually be the final score.
Although Northwestern held possession of the lead, both teams came out of intermission aggressively, exchanging shots back and forth. Both defensive efforts stood their ground, however, and refused to let either team land a ball in the net as time ticked off the clock.
After a corner kick at the 87:50 mark, UMM later went on to utilize a yellow card situation to place one more shot on goal with just five seconds left in the contest, but another stop by Coleman ended the game in favor of the Eagles.
Both the Eagles and the visitors barely reached the double-digit shot total for the afternoon, with UMM posting 11 in comparison to UNW's 10. The two teams notched an equal six shots on goal, while the home team bested the Cougars in the battle for corner kicks with a total of six.
Coleman earned the victory between the pipes on the afternoon with five saves, many of which were key stops in the close contest.
The win marked Northwestern's third win of both the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) and overall regular season. The Eagles will strive to stretch make it a perfect weekend on Saturday as the Crown College Storm will travel east for a 12 p.m. noon matchup at Reynolds Field.
